Every year following the Year 10 School Certificate a group of students create the annual school newspaper Mirror on Macintyre. The two weeks spent constructing the paper is a work experience option to learn newspaper production skills. Gabi Potbury, Bobbie Doye, Marnie Wade, Louise Holder and I were the journalists and editors and Meg Hanlon was our fantastic cartoonist.

My thanks to the entire Macintyre community for the warm and friendly welcome I have enjoyed in the first two weeks as principal of Macintyre High School. I have purchased a home in Inverell and I am settling in well, even managing to finish the unpacking of my many boxes! I attended the 72nd birthday dinner of the Inverell Rotary Club last week, as a visiting member from the Rotary Club of Bombala. I enjoyed a wonderful evening and was delighted to meet many strong supporters of Macintyre in the process.

Year 12 students have just completed their trial HSC exams.Early indications from their teachers as the marking of papers progresses are very positive. This is in keeping with the positive overall impression I gained from reading the Year 12 semester one reports and from the solid preparation Year 12 have put in prior to the trial exams.

A key ingredient in the “magic of Macintyre” is the student body. Our school is blessed with students who want to get involved, who work well with others and who get on well with their teachers. Student leadership is a stand out feature of this school and our senior students are immensely proud of their role in setting the high standards and modeling these standards in their daily behaviour.

Understanding mathematics can be a hurdle for many students. Lack of confidence can also be a problem. Now thanks to the recent installation of the Interactive Classroom at Macintyre High School student involvement in mathematics is being approached from a different angle. Instead of the squeak of chalk on the board there is now the quiet hum of the computer hardware, video camera, plasma TV screen and smartboard starting up at the beginning of each lesson.

Last week’s education week awards were an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by students, parents, community members and teachers for the benefit of our students.

Enthusiastic music student and saxophone player Mikaela Mepham was again selected to participate in the New England Regional Band camp recently. A very excited Mikaela was selected from this camp to represent the region in the State Wind Band. This makes it two years in a row for Mikaela and we are all delighted to see her hard work and high level of musical competence paying dividends again.

I am sure parents who read glowing reports of Macintyre High School ANZAC Day ceremonies must compare my comments to their own school experiences and wonder why we make such a fuss. I have worked in many schools over my 40 years of teaching and I have not seen anything to even approach the quality and intensity of our ceremonies.

Jake Ryan and Eli Kimmince were the powerhouses behind the ‘Shave for a Cure’ which saw a number of the senior boys delocked. Jake, Eli, Shaun Allen and Hugh Williams were all brave enough to front up and loose their hair. Eli stoically endured leg waxing which looked incredibly painful. His work donated $200 toward the cause so hopefully it was worth the suffering .

March 14, 2008   (2.02Mb)

Make sure you mark Friday 28 March down in your calendar. The place to be at 6.00 pm on Friday night is at Macintyre High School. Last year, the food was just simply delicious. Parents assure me that the prices we charge are way under the cost of a traditional take-away meal for a family and the tastes are sensational!
