Annual school newspaper in Inverell Times on December 5
Every year following the Year 10 School Certificate
a group of students create the annual school
newspaper Mirror on Macintyre.
The two weeks spent constructing the paper is a
work experience option to learn newspaper
production skills.
Gabi Potbury, Bobbie Doye, Marnie Wade, Louise
Holder and I were the journalists and editors and
Meg Hanlon was our fantastic cartoonist.
We spent every school day for two weeks writing
stories, laying out pages and editing photos to
finally complete the newspaper. We used the
program QwarkXpress which allowed us to set out
and rearrange the layout of the individual pages of
the newspaper on school computers. It is a
program used by newspapers all around the world.
Writing stories and editing photos are not the only
things we had to achieve. The school newspaper is
completely paid for by asking local businesses to
place advertisements in the paper. These ads were
collected, created and edited by Marnie and I.
When writing a story, the students or teachers
involved are interviewed to gain the information and
suitable quotes. The whole experience gave us a
broader insight into the world of journalism.
It took us two weeks to create a 12 page
newspaper. Just think - other journalists write, edit
